DTN Workshop on Environmental Monitoring Begins at Prime College

Prime College is proud to host the DTN Workshop on Environmental Monitoring, jointly organized with NREN and ICT4D in collaboration with ICTP.

The five-day international workshop has brought together more than 35 participants from Nepal, along with regional fellows and representatives from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and India. The program serves as a platform for international collaboration, technical learning, and knowledge exchange in the field of resilient networking technologies.

What is DTN?

Delay-Tolerant Networking (DTN) is an advanced communication technology designed to maintain network connectivity even in challenging environments where conventional internet infrastructure may fail. This includes remote and mountainous regions, disaster-affected areas, and locations with intermittent connectivity.

DTN has strong potential for countries like Nepal, where geography and infrastructure challenges can limit communication access. The technology can support environmental monitoring, disaster risk reduction, river-level observation, climate sensing, and future early warning systems.

DTN Workshop

Distinguished Opening Session

The workshop commenced with inspiring opening remarks from Vint Cerf (delivered remotely), widely recognized as one of the fathers of the Internet for his pioneering role in developing TCP/IP protocols, and Mahabir Pun, celebrated for bringing wireless internet connectivity to remote villages of Nepal through the Nepal Wireless Networking Project.

Both speakers highlighted the transformative power of connectivity and the importance of reaching underserved and remote communities through innovative technologies.

International Experts and Hands-on Learning

The sessions are being led by renowned ICTP resource persons, including Marco Zennaro, Samo Grasic, and Scott Burleigh, with valuable support from local facilitators.

The workshop continued with engaging technical sessions led by internationally recognized experts. Among the featured speakers was Laura Chappell, a globally respected network analyst, author, and educator known for her expertise in packet analysis, protocol troubleshooting, and Wireshark training. She conducted a valuable Day 2 session, further enriching the learning experience for participants.

Throughout the week, participants will engage in technical sessions, collaborative discussions, and practical hands-on workshops focused on DTN architecture, real-world applications, and innovative solutions for environmental monitoring.
